Original Pattern Brewing Co. does not do subtle names, and this one leads the pack. That's A Bloody Outrage It Is! is a Hazy Pale Ale at a friendly 5.6% ABV, built with a trio of hops, New Zealand Waimea, Australian Enigma, and Australian Galaxy, all pulling from the same Southern Hemisphere neighborhood of flavor.
The result pours juicy, with notes of passionfruit, peach, citrus, and general tropical fruit stacking up before finishing soft and smooth, and dangerously easy to drink, which is exactly the kind of phrase that should come with a small disclaimer. Hazy pale ales sometimes get treated as the lighter, less interesting cousin of the hazy IPA, but this one seems intent on proving that theory wrong through sheer hop selection alone.
Oakland's Original Pattern has built a whole identity around a fast-moving, constantly rotating lineup, brewing fresh batches often enough that regulars know not to hesitate if something catches their eye. This is one of six new releases dropping together this week, which is either an impressive show of brewing capacity or a mild identity crisis, and either way, the beer itself doesn't seem to know or care.
Available in the taproom and shipping Friday at noon, with delivery available across the entire state of California for anyone who can't make the trip to Oakland in person.
If the name alone doesn't get you in the door, the passionfruit probably will.
