Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout

Blackfoot River spent eight months aging this Imperial Stout in Willett bourbon barrels, which is longer than most people spend on anything, and the result drinks like chocolate, coffee, and a campfire made peace with each other.

While Blackfoot River Brewing Company's taproom is busy handing out lemony shandies for the patio crowd, someone in the back has clearly been sitting in the dark with a much more serious project. The 2026 Brewers Reserve is a Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, and at 10.7% ABV with a full 100 IBU, it is not remotely interested in your casual Tuesday.

This is an intensely flavored, full bodied dark ale that spent eight months resting in Willett bourbon barrels, which is roughly the gestation period of a very patient beer. That time in oak pays off in strong flavors of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, bourbon, and oak, stacked on top of each other like a dessert that wandered into a distillery by accident and decided to stay.

Helena, Montana isn't exactly bourbon country, but Blackfoot River has clearly figured out that a good barrel doesn't care what state it's sitting in. Eight months is a serious commitment for a barrel-aged beer, long enough for the wood to really argue its case rather than just leave a polite suggestion of vanilla in passing.

Blackfoot River describes this one as ready to drink and perfect to age, which is the brewing equivalent of telling you both options are correct so stop overthinking it. Given the stout's origins as an annual Brewers Reserve release, there's a decent chance a few bottles quietly disappear into someone's cellar for a year, only to reemerge even moodier and more chocolatey than before.

At $15 a bottle, this isn't an impulse buy so much as a considered one, the sort of beer you pour after the sun goes down and the shandy crowd has gone home. Pick one up at the Helena taproom, and maybe set a second aside. Future you, sitting through a Montana winter, will be very grateful for the decision.
